How to Make Your POD Prints Last Longer (Simple Care Guide)

Print-on-Demand clothing is made to order and printed with modern techniques like DTG (Direct-to-Garment). The designs look great—but like any quality apparel, the way you wash and store your tee matters.

If you want your print to stay crisp and your shirt to feel new for longer, here’s the easiest care guide to follow.

1) Wash inside out (always)

Turning the shirt inside out reduces friction between the print and other fabrics. Less rubbing = less fading.

Best practice:

  • Inside out before washing

  • Avoid washing with rough items (denim, towels, heavy hoodies)

2) Use cold water and gentle cycles

Heat is one of the biggest reasons prints crack or fade over time. Cold water helps preserve both fabric softness and print quality.

Recommended settings:

  • Cold water

  • Gentle/normal cycle

  • Mild detergent

3) Skip harsh detergents and bleach

Strong chemicals break down the ink and can discolor the fabric.

Avoid:

  • Bleach

  • Heavy stain removers directly on the print

  • High-perfume detergents (can be harsh on some fabrics)

If you need to remove stains, treat the stain from the inside of the shirt first, not the printed surface.

4) Don’t iron directly on the print

Ironing on top of a print can damage the ink layer.

If you need to iron:

  • Turn the shirt inside out

  • Or place a thin cloth over the print

  • Use low heat

5) Air dry if you can (or use low heat)

Tumble drying at high heat wears prints faster and can slightly shrink cotton.

Best options:

  • Air dry (recommended)

  • Or tumble dry low heat

  • Remove promptly—don’t over-dry

6) Store it properly (small step, big difference)

Hanging can stretch certain cotton collars over time—especially heavier shirts.

For best results:

  • Fold your tees

  • Keep them away from damp areas

  • Don’t leave in direct sun for long periods (UV can fade prints)

Quick checklist (save this)

✅ Wash inside out
✅ Cold water
✅ Mild detergent
✅ No bleach
✅ Low heat / air dry
✅ No ironing directly on print

Final note

POD prints are built to last—but proper care makes them last longer and look better. If you treat your tee right, it stays a favorite piece—not a “one season” shirt.
